Physical Education
Intent:
At Riverside Primary School, physical education is an integral part of our curriculum that is inclusive and engages all pupils. Children develop the knowledge, skills and competence to excel in a broad range of sports and physical activities. We aim to deliver high-quality teaching and learning opportunities that enables all children to achieve their personal best. Children participate in competitive sport and we teach them to transfer their ‘Riverside Attitude’ to the sporting activity, ensuring they do their best and are display good sportsmanship. We aim for all children to be physically active for sustained periods of time and be able to make informed decisions to lead healthy and active lives. Swimming is an important life skill, we aspire for all children to leave primary school being able to swim at least 25 metres.
Implementation:
- Children participate in high-quality PE lessons twice a week focusing on two sports per term.
-Teachers use, and adapt, 'Get Set 4 PE' planning and resources to ensure lessons across years show progression.
-Classes follow the PE overview to ensure pupils participate in a variety of sports.
-Children participate in a variety of competitive sports as part of RMET. Riverside Primary School attend sports festivals for Key Stage 1 and 2 and participate in Mini-Youth Games.
-All classes participate in 5-a-day, BBC Super Movers or Firefighter Fit Kids fitness videos on a daily basis to help students meet the 30 minutes of physical activity at school.
-All classes take part in the Daily Mile during their day which helps contribute to the 30 minutes of physical activity at school.
-Children attend swimming lessons in Year 2, 4 and 6.
-We provide children with opportunities to participate in extra-curricular activities that are inclusive, enjoyable and increase children’s physical activity. SEND sports clubs are offered to both KS1 and KS2 pupils.
-Annually, the school celebrates ‘Healthy Living Week’ to educate and promote a healthy lifestyle and physical activity. Children engage in different workshops, activities and sports, and the week culminates with our whole-school Sports day.
Impact:
At Riverside Primary School, we ensure that our PE curriculum is progressive and allows children to develop fundamental skills and apply them to a variety of sports and activities. All children are provided with the skills and given opportunities to demonstrate improvement to achieve their personal best. Our pupils are physically active and this has positive implications on their learning in the classroom. Children understand how to lead a healthy lifestyle and understand the importance of exercise. We hope children enjoy PE and develop a love of sport, and physical activity, that they pursue outside of school and in future life outside of primary school. All pupils understand the values and importance of fair play and being a good sportsperson. Year 6 pupils leave school with the skills to self-rescue in the water and swim 25 metres competently.
Our Curriculum
We use Get Set 4 PE to support our PE Curriculum. It builds on skills and knowledge in all areas of PE over time.
Healthy School
Having a good understanding of what it means to have a healthy lifestyle is a vital part of your child's PE education. Children are taught about the importance of exercise and of eating a balanced diet. We then use our kitchen facility to teach the children about nutrition and learn to make different healthy meals and snacks.
To help to keep the children active during the day, alongside our PE lessons we also do the Daily Mile.
Clubs
At Riverside we are proud of the range of extra curricular activities that we offer to all of our students. Clubs are run on a termly basis with a mixture of teacher lead and PE experts. Please see the Clubs section of our website.
